Families are children's first and most enduring teachers, so involving them in learning strengthens outcomes and continuity between home and kindergarten. Australian Education Research Organisation [AERO] (2021) presents evidence that family engagement is most effective when it focuses on learning, involves two-way communication and builds on what families already do at home. Grace et al. (2022) describe the diversity of contemporary Australian families, which means strategies need to be flexible and culturally responsive. I chose AERO's evidence-based practice guide for family engagement because it provides strategies informed by research, such as sharing learning goals, inviting families to contribute knowledge and suggesting playful home experiences (Figure 6). Fleer (2021) shows how family play practices can become a bridge to learning at kindergarten. This resource will help me build genuine partnerships, so families feel they are active contributors to their children's learning.
